American History through Poetry

[For Ages 18+] We'll study poems by American poets commenting on events happening in their times or earlier, focusing on the question of what it means to be an American. We'll begin with African American poet Phillis Wheatley, continue through the 19th century's exploration of nationhood, and end in the 20th century, when various voices outside the canon began to be heard.
