Book Discussion: The Civically Engaged Reader: A Diverse Collection of Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity - online via Zoom
[Teens and Adults] The League of Women Voters of Albany County and Albany Public Library invite you to participate in an online group reading and discussion series of The Civically Engaged Reader: A Diverse Collection of Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity (edited by Adam Davis/Elizabeth Lynn).
Click here to register for this program. You'll be emailed a Zoom link upon registration and on the day of each session.
The Civically Engaged Reader is a collection of writings -- poems, short stories, essays, articles and discussions from diverse times and voices -- ranging across literature, philosophy, and religion and all thematically wound around the issue of being civically engaged. These selections invite reflection on all kinds of civic-minded activities, from giving and serving to leading and associating, and on the vital connections between thought and service. This discussion group will examine these issues through the lens of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
The discussion is led by Albany Law Professor Serena Joyce White-Lake, who practices law and teaches at Albany Law School. She is an active member of the New York State Bar Association, the Albany County Bar Association, and the Capital District Women's Bar Association.
There will be four Thursday evening sessions 6:00pm - 7:30pm on 10/27, 11/3, 11/10 and 12/1. Attendance is expected at all sessions.
The first 20 registrants will receive a free copy of the book to keep. After registering, participants will be asked via email about which Albany Public Library branch they'd like to pick up their book. Registrants who don't receive books will be emailed copies of the selected readings. For more information or questions, email the League of Women Voters at firstname.lastname@example.org with “Civically Engaged Reader” in the subject line or call the Delaware Branch Reference Desk at 518-427-4300 ext. 2223.
This series is made possible by a Humanities NY grant.
